- Completed in 1497
- Made out of stone and covered with stucco as well as polychrome paint.
- Main religious building of Tenochtitlan
- Huitzilopochtli = god of sun and war, translates to hummingbird of the south.
- Tlaloc = god of rain and fertility
- Both gods required constant human sacrifice
- The Templo Mayor was used for many ceremonies:
- Human sacrifice being the most common
- Private bloodletting
- Burning of Copal
- Music of Worship
- Shows what the Aztecs used to carve sculptures (stone, different tools, etc.)
- Shows what is valued and is important to the Aztecs (the deities, etc.)
- Aztec sculptures are preserved in museums
